For the Love of Labourers

You’d normally think everyone always roots for the little guy, right? Unfortunately, within the construction industry, labourers are under appreciated for the work they do. Of course, there are some bad apples (as there is with any job), but largely I think we need to be grateful for the work they do and give them the thanks they deserve.   

If you think about the knock-on affect of not having a labourer on site when you need one, it’s larger than what you think. The progression of the site slows as skilled operatives aren’t being given the materials to complete their tasks, in addition to this, deliveries aren’t unloaded promptly which can lead to congestion on the site; and health and safety standards may drop as there’s no one present to clear debris from walkways.

Throughout my time working for 1st Step Solutions, I have had a personal affinity for recruiting labourers. I now have a small group of tried and tested labourers which I try to keep busy and employed. This group is ever growing with new operatives and new placements.

I think its important to find the right labourer for the right project and focus on what skills they can bring to the table. For example, we have had a labourer Marvin, who has worked consistently on mechanical projects for us since 2022, he has aspirations to progress within the mechanical industry so we continually look for placements which will allow him to develop further.

Sometimes as Labourers aren’t respected, recruiting agents don’t listen to what skills they have and find them their perfect placement. Here at 1st Step, we like to make time for everyone who call us and utilise their strengths to benefit all parties.
