World Earth Day
Here at 1st Step Solutions, we think it is important to give back to everyone around us. Whilst we have upcoming charity events such as Hayley Laurance’s Sky Dive on the 13th of July for Cancer Research and the Macmillan Mighty Hike that three staff members are taking part in. We are keen to help with more local efforts too, especially on World Earth Day.
To give back to our own local environment we have organised a litter pick on the area around our office. Our office is located just off the A127, and we get a lot of roadside litter stuck amongst the grass, and bushes that run alongside the road.
Roadside litter is a growing issue in the UK, with up to one-third of motorists admitting to littering whilst driving. Unfortunatley, the hedgerows which run alongside the road are vital wildlife corridors for over 130 species such as, the door mouse, hedgehogs, and voles, however, roadside litter kills approximately 3.2 million small species each year, with them often getting trapped inside or ingesting the discarded rubbish.
With orange and banana peels taking up to 2 years to biodegrade, this shows that all litter impacts the environment negatively for a significant amount of time. This is why you should keep hold of your rubbish until you get home, or until you find a bin to safely dispose of it.
If you want to get involved with World Earth Day on the 22nd of April, I encourage you to pick up your litter grabbers and a bin bag and start local. Most local council offer schemes / initiative where they may provide you with litter picking equipment, or Facebook groups can organise events where all are welcome to join with the effort to protect our environment. Even a 5-minute walk picking up rubbish WILL have a positive impact on the environment around you.
I wish you a happy World Earth Day, and I encourage you to join in and keep the UK to be the best it can be.
